The responsibility for shaping and implementation of the national environmental policy lies with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and its objective is to ensure the integration and inclusion of this policy into all areas of society and sectors of economy. This was noted today during a public report of the Government by Acting Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Serhii Kurykin.

“We highly appreciate the team spirit that exists today in the government staff, in the Cabinet of Ministers, and we feel mutual support, understanding, and this is the factor that contributes to solving issues faced by the Government, as a whole, and by the Ministry, in particular” - Serhii Kurykin said.

In particular, he stressed that to date the Ministry has set itself an ambitious objective: to increase the percentage of territories with conservation status to the EU average. He emphasized that the amount of conservation areas is an important factor for the environmental protection, and now in Ukraine the percentage of territories with conservation status is very low - only 6 %.

“And our objective is ambitious but executable: to increase this percentage to the EU average, such as 20 %. Carrying out this objective, we, in particular, have already submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers three draft presidential decrees on the extension of territories and objects of nature reserve fund in Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Ternopil, Cherkasy, Kherson and Khmelnytskyy regions”- he reported and added that it is the expansion of areas of the already existing objects.

In addition, according to Serhii Kurykin, the Chernobyl radiation ecological biosphere reserve project that is to be established in the Chornobyl zone and take approximately 226 thousand ha, continues to be relevant.

Also, Acting Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources informed that the ministry deals with all issues openly and transparently. This is particularly evidenced by recruitment policy. “We have introduced public and open selection for positions, for example, of directors of national parks. A competitive selection, an interview are broadcast via the Internet”, - he said.
