PLANS FOR EU LAWS IMPLEMENTATION ON WASTE MANAGEMENT HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY THE MINISTRY OF ECOLOGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES OF UKRAINE AND APPROVED BY THE CABINET OF MINISTERS OF UKRAINE

It was declared by Serhii Kurykin, the acting Minister, during opening of the National Forum “Waste Management in Ukraine: Laws, Economy, Technologies”.

The purpose of the Forum is to promote investment and innovations attraction, implementation of environmentally friendly, resource and energy efficient technologies, development of recommendations for comprehensive solutions of municipal and regional problems in the area of waste management, assistance in cooperation between public authorities, local governments, NGOs, science, business, preparation of regulatory and legal framework  in waste management, establishment and strengthening of international cooperation, environmental conservation, introduction of sustainable development principles in Ukraine.

 “For Ukraine, the European integration processes in environmental protection open bright prospects, as well as pose serious challenges, waste management is not an exception,” said Serhii Kurykin.

Upon signing of the Association Agreement, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine by its Regulation No. 847 dated 17.09.2014 approved the Action Plan for Implementation of Association Agreement between Ukraine, on the one hand, and the European Union, the European Atomic Energy Community and its member states, on the other hand; the fundamental tasks for 2014-2017 to be fulfilled by Ukraine have been approved.

For the purpose of proper implementation of the tasks on harmonization of legislation of Ukraine with EU legislation, the Plans for EU Laws Implementation on Waste Management have been developed by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine and approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, including amendments to the legislation on waste management in accordance with EU, namely:

European Parliament and Council Directive 2008/98/EC on waste dated November 19, 2008

European Parliament and Council Directive 2006/21/EС on mining industry waste management and amending Directive 2004/35/ЄС

Council Directive 1999/31/EС on waste disposal amended by Regulation (EU) No. 1882/2003 dated April 26, 1999.

“Such forums promote establishment of effective cooperation between different sectors of society with regard to waste management,” said the acting Minister.
