Oleg Proskuriakov met Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Sven Alkalaj

On November 15th, 2013 during the working visit to Geneva, Switzerland, Minister Oleg Proskuriakov met Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Sven Alkalaj.

During the meeting the parties discussed the topical issues of cooperation under the terms of the Espoo Convention and determined perspective ways of cooperation between Ukraine and UNECE in the environment area. Sven Alkalaj mentioned that hosting of the Sixth Meeting of the Parties to the Espoo Convention in June, 2014 is an important step due to increasing of and role and power of Ukraine on the  environmental policy within European and worldwide context. Minister Oleg Proskuriakov stressed that Ukraine will make all the preparations for this event in the proper way.

Minister provide Sven Alkalaj with information about the process of implementation of the European legislative instruments in the environment area in the transboundary context. Particularly, he mentioned about the preparations for consideration by the Verhovna Rada Dtaft Law of Ukraine “On Introducing Amendments to the certain Laws of Ukraine on implementation of the provisions of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context”

Oleg Proskuriakov informed about the work made for implementation of the 31 environment Directives of the EU to approximate Ukraine’s legislation to the legislation of the European Union and asked Sven Alkalaj to facilitate the invitation of the ministers of ecology and energy sector for the high level segment of the Meeting. Sven Alkalaj assured about his personal presence at the event in Kyiv.

Furthermore, parties discussed the issues of the collaboration between Ukraine and neighboring countries in the context of the provisions of the Convention.

Minister also met the management of the UN Department of Ecology, heads of the delegations of the counties that are the parties of the Espoo Convention and participate in the meeting of the Environment Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment Workshop, particularly from Austria, Lithuania, Romania and Moldova.
