Deputy Minister - Head of Staff Sushko Oleksandr took part in the Second Meeting of the Managing Committee of the Program FAO/UC

On November 11, 2013 Deputy Minister – Head of Staff Oleksandr Sushko took part at the Second Meeting of the Managing Committee of the Program FAO/UN “Strengthening of the potential in the field of utilization of pesticides and prevention of its stocks accumulation as a model for management of unusable hazardous chemicals at the territory of the former Soviet Union”.

The meeting was attended by the Delegations of the ministries of environment and agriculture from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine as well as representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization, European Commission and other international organizations specialized in protection against hazardous chemicals.

At the opening ceremony of the Managing Committee Sushko Oleksandr stressed that waste treatment is one of the most important environment issue in Ukraine and in all over the world. “Discussion of the problems concerned with accumulation of pesticides in the regions of Central and Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia and many other counties is the topical problem, - Sushko Oleksander said.

Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine consider cooperation with international environment organizations, institutions and other partners as one of the main priorities in its activity.

Nowadays Ukraine takes part in 44 international conventions in the matter of environment protection. It also takes part in the international negotiation process and cooperation within the framework of multilateral agreements.

It is important to fulfill the responsibilities within the following conventions:

-          Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal;

-          Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants;

-          Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent about Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade.

Taking into account the importance and urgency of the problems in this area, the Ministry developed a draft on National Waste Management Programme for 2013-2020, which will be introduced by the Government to the Verhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The Ministry launched the practical implementation of the measures aimed to clearing the state from places of accumulation of hazardous waste. The main attention is paid to the most resonant and environmentally dangerous waste".
