Oleg Proskuriakov: “Waste management is one of the most important current environmental issue”

On November 6, 2013, XII International of HCH and Pesticides Association Forum was opened.

The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Oleg Proskuryakov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety EP Dan Yohensen, FAO Regional Programme Coordinator Kevin Helps.

Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, UNEP, SI-Group (Consort) was co-organizers of the Forum.

“Waste management is one of the most important current issues in the environmental area. It is under supervision of the President of Ukraine and the Government”, - said the Minister.

Main purpose of the XII International of HCH and Pesticides Association Forum is discussion of the issues concerned with the great amount of unusable pesticides and persistent organic pollutants in the regions of Central and Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia and many other countries all over the world. This forum is conducted in the light of the achievements of Ukraine, which for the last 3 years has made a great job for the disposal of hazardous waste. Another aim of the Forum is to discuss further develop parallel strategies of sustainable agriculture, which is based on minimizing the use of chemicals..

 "Considering the emergency of solving the problems in this area, Ministry has developed the draft Program on the waste managemant for 2013 – 2020 years and will introduce it for consideration by the VerhovnaRada of Ukraine. Ministry also works towards practical measures of the hazardous waste utilization. Most resonant and dangerous wastes is under special attention", – said the Minister.

       Oleg Proskuryakov also noted that over the past three years has been done tremendous work, that is exported from Ukraine::

-       1300 tons of the mixture “Premix”, which was illegally carried into Ukraine;

-       more than 26 000 tons of unusable pesticides

-       more than 21 000 tons of benzene hexachloride from the hazardous waste landfill in the Kalushs’kiy District in the Ivano-Frankivs’k;

-       more than 2700 tons of monochlorbenzene from the territory of the government enterprise “Zahid” (Kyiv);

-       320 tons of wastes which contains beryllium from the territory of the government enterprise “Zahid” (Kyiv);

“Implementation of these measures significantly improved the ecological status of the territories and allowed to relieve social tension among the population.”, - said the Minister.

XII International of HCH and Pesticides Association Forum will be held on 6-8th of November. Place of venue: 2, Kreschatik Street, Kyiv, ICC "Ukrainian House"
